I have an 12" 1Ghz IBook that works quite well. Simple, small, compact and it does everything I would want my computer to do. I'm currently dual-booting Gentoo and Mac OS X. Sleep doesn't work on either the Powerbook or the IBook, as does the Airport Extreme 802.11b/g card. The IBook is supposed to enjoy better 3D acceleration support than the Powerbook.

There's a thread titled Powerbook or IBook started by me discussing the differences between the two. There's also another intresting thread about the G3 and the G4 IBooks.

If you don't want to go portable, save up for the G5.

I just purchased the same hardware configuration, except I got the 1.33GHz processor.

The project I work on is migrating to the G5/Gentoo architecture, and I wanted something to learn on. I have a lot of experience with SPARC/Intel platforms and Solaris, but haven't touched a Mac since my IIci several years ago.

This should be fun.
