I've just installed gentoo on my Powerbook 867 Mhz. I followed the instructions very carefully, and did not seem to have any problems. When I was finished, I restarted and was greeted by the yaboot screen. I can boot into OS X without issue. However, I cannot boot into Gentoo. Most of the time, the screen goes blank after a few seconds. When it does not do this, it seems to proceed normally, only to automatically reboot the machine. The last message I see that seems to be curious is:

warning: unable to open an initial console

Again, I followed the installation instructions very carefully and didn't recieve any error messages. The only things I might be suspicious about are: (a) I didn't know what it meant for root to be able to "log on through the serial console," so I went ahead and typed 'echo "tts/0" >> /etc/securetty' as mentioned in chapter 11, and (b) I used a configuration file for a 1Ghz Powerbook from ppcconfdb.sourceforge.net, whereas I have an 867 Mhz (surely they are similar enough?)

I would really appreciate any help, because I am really stumped. The kernel I am using is the 2.6.7 kernel provided by portage. Thanks in advance for any help.

I can think of two reasons for this:
either you haven't compiled "Support for virtual consoles" into your kernel,
or your /dev directory has no tty-device files inside. They're needed before the devfs is mounted under /dev. There should be a script /sbin/MAKEDEV (yes, all capitals) that properly populates /dev.
