Hello all,

I am a Linux newbie, trying to install Gentoo onto my 15" 1.25Ghz G4 Aluminum Powerbook. I tried following the installation manual and the HowTo on this board, but I ran into the following problems:

1. When unpacking the stage 3 file, at the end is says "Error exit delayed due to previous errors".

2. Using "emerge sync" doesn't work, it says "temporary failure in name resolution." I tried it several times and it didn't work, so I used the "emerge-webrsync" command instead.

3. when trying to configure the kernel, when I did the "emerge ppc-sources-benh" command, it says "ARCH not defined" then it asks if the
/etc/make.profile symbolic link is correct, and I don't even know what that is.

Thanks for your help getting me started with Linux!

Okay - first, some diagnosis:

For emerge sync, are you behind a particularly restrictive firewall/proxy? Are you sure name resolution is working? Try this to verify that DNS resolution works:
Code:

ping -c5 apple.com

I picked apple.com because it returns ICMP pings and it's fast (yay Akamai!)

As for the kernel sources, try the ppc-dev-sources or the gentoo-dev-sources. I think the former is an alias for the latter, as benh merged his patchset back into the 2.6 tree. Someona want to verify this?

I think the stage tarball errors can be safely ignored.

Ok, I fiddled with some network configuration stuff and now I'm back on track. Thanks!
