Hi All,

I'm trying to get the liveCD 2004.1 ppc cd to boot an a G3 lombard powerbook (the tranlucent brown keyboard). I can boot to the live CD by holding down the c key, but it always seems to fail to mount the live cd volume. Can someone help me figure this out? I'd like to put this machine to good use!

autoloading 2.6.5-gentoo-G4 modules

...

device /dec/cdroms/*
losetup: /mnt/live/mtn/cdrom/libecd.gcloop: No such file or directory
mount: Mouning /dev/loop/0 on /mnt/live/mnt/live-end failed: Invalid
argument

cp: dev: No such file or directory

...

Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!

Thanks!

2004.1 doesn't have the CD drivers. You have to use 2004.0 instead. I ran into the same problem. It does work well though. I've been enjoying Gentoo on my Lombard. I'm seriously considering a bigger HD though. Just tonight I wiped the OS 9 partition out and now I have to figure out how to get it booting again.

Thanks! I was just about to give up. I'll be giving the 2004.0 version a try today.

I thought that was a Pismo, am I wrong?

I have the same problem, same computer, 2004.0 did load up for me, but I couldn't get connected to the net, still can't find Net-setup on the CD. And adsl-setup doesn't seem to work.

If you could, after you try the other, can you post up your results?
Thanks.

Yes, I think it's the Lombard. The Pismo is the one with firewire ports, the Lombard has the "bronze" keyboard and USB. To get your NIC working
Code:
modprobe bmac
and, config /etc/conf.d/net to set eth0 to DHCP and run
Code:
/etc/init.d/net.eth0 start
.

Mine's running like a pro except that my cable doesn't have a clip on it so falls out once in awhile, but I can hardly blame Linux for that. :-)

I've also managed to get fluxbox running beautifully and pbbuttonsd is a great prog to get the Fn button and the various keys working with it. I have yet to refine that, but certainly helped. Sound also is working, but I forget what I had to load to get that going.

Hopefully, In 2004.2 they won't forget our CD driver. :-) (hint, hint)

No problem, there are some good guides on this board from other PPC notebooks that helped out a lot. Specifically, check out the sticky post for some good tips. You have to deviate a bit, but you'll manage.

So far, the only cd I've been able to boot holding down the 'c' is the 2004.1 cd which then can not mount the cd filesystem. The 2004.0 cd grinds away for a while and then eventually goes to os 9. The same CD in my 2002 LCD imac boots just fine with gentoo 2004.1 or 2004.0. I'm definitely getting a bit frustrated.

is there a way from openfirmware to boot the gentoo live cd?

:( I think I'm giving up on this latop. It's gonna cost me too much time to finally figure out and someone dropped an x86 laptop on me to replace the mac. sigh... would have been so satistfying to use this G3.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions folks.

2004.2 should come out sometime soon. I hear that at least the x86 LiveCDs are in testing so maybe the PPC ones are too. Might be worth just keeping an eye on. If not, I'd be interested in what you are thinking about doing to get rid of that thing. :)
