I was wondering if it's possible to install Gentoo on an external firewire harddrive then dual boot with OSX. If so, are changes necessary to the boot process? I want to install Gentoo on my Powerbook then dual boot with OSX, however, I have a small harddrive and would rather use an external drive if possible.

Thanks.
Richard

Did anyone respond privately to this original posting? This is exactly what I'm hoping to do as well.

I'm trying to do exactly that, but it's not easy. Installation went without a hitch (just make sure you plug in your drive after you modprobe sbp2 and ohci1394 and you should find your FireWire drive at /dev/sd?). Booting is quite a different story. I found some information here, but I can't even get yaboot to load:
Code:
0 > boot fw/node/sbp-2/disk@0:9,yaboot
MAC-PARTS: specified partition is not valid can't OPEN: fw/node/sbp-2/disk@0:9,yaboot

 ok

I do get drive access (the led flickers) so at least the device is correct, but something appears to be wrong with the partition or something.
Bootstrap partition is /dev/sda9, root is /dev/sda11.
Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, I got a bit further. What I did was boot into MacOS X and use pdisk to delete all driver partitions. Then I created a new bootstrap partition right after the partition map, type 'Apple_HFS' (yaboot tells me this should be 'Apple_Bootstrap' though') and size 1600 (800KB). Then I booted back from the LiveCD, mounted root filesystem etc, altered my yaboot.conf file to reflect the changes in the partition map, mkofboot -b /dev/sda2, ybin -v --nonvram
and booted into OF.
Code:
boot fw/node/sbp-2/disk@0:2,yaboot
brought me to the yaboot prompt! Kernel loaded (had to type it manually, I think I forgot to change something in yaboot.conf), root FS not found though.

I've given up for now, I just can't manage to get the root fs mounted properly. I set up a ramdisk that loads the FireWire modules, even added some sleeps in linuxrc so that I have the time to plug in the drive after the modules have been loaded (which is how I got it to work with the LiveCD), but to no avail.
