I'm using kernel version 2.6.7_rc3 and module-init-tools version 3.0_pre10. I'm using the ALSA modules provided with the kernel source. Whenever I try to start the alsasound service, I get this:

Code:
 * Loading ALSA drivers...
 * Using ALSA OSS emulation
 * Loading: snd-pcm-oss
 * Loading: snd-seq-oss
 * Loading: snd-powermac
Oops: kernel access of bad area, sig: 11 [#1]

(I also get the same problem if I do a "modprobe snd_powermac").
Afterwards, "lsmod" shows that all the ALSA modules are loaded, but aplay and alsamixer don't work, both giving a "No such device" error. Does anyone have any ideas as to what's going on?

By any chance are you using a G4? I have similar problems with my G4 IBook. If I don't compile in the Pmac_dma_sound support my kernel seg faults on boot up. People using G3 seem to have no problems getting ALSA support. I'm thinking that it's a kernel bug.

OSS works okay though.

Fixed the problem by loading the "i2c-dev" and "i2c-keywest" modules before starting the alsasound service. Seems kind of obvious now. :oops:
