Mine did this for a while...

Make sure you compile devfs support in your kernel.

run genkernel with

genkernel --menuconfig all

You first need to enable 'experimental/whatever options' in 'Code Maturity Options', then you can select devfs support in pseudo filesystems.

(I forget the exact option names, but you get the gist).

udev is meant to replace devfs is kernel 2.6.somethingorother, but I had no joy with udev alone.

If you compile them both, you can pick between them with boot flags in grub.conf.

...

Something like

Code:

title  Gentoo Linux 2.6.5-r1 (DEVFS) (Bluez patches, gcc 3.4.0)
root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/kernel-2.6.5-gentoo-r1 root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc real_root=/dev/hda3 vga=0x31A splash=verbose gentoo=noudev
initrd=(hd0,0)/initrd-2.6.5-gentoo-r1

title  Gentoo Linux 2.6.5-r1 (UDEV) (Bluez patches, gcc 3.4.0)
root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/kernel-2.6.5-gentoo-r1 root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc real_root=/dev/hda3 vga=0x31A splash=verbose devfs=nomount gentoo=nodevfs
initrd=(hd0,0)/initrd-2.6.5-gentoo-r1

You prolly want to change the vga setting, unless you have a 1280x1024 TFT monitor...

Moo.
