I have Gentoo on a 7500 with 604e upgrade, and it was mostly working well until I made the mistake of rebooting it to try and fix portage (emerge was constantly segfaulting, despite numerous reinstallations, and rebooting was suggested somewhere). The kernel (2.6.5-gentoo-r1) boots just fine, but when it starts init, I get a strange message: "respawn: missing action fieldrespawn." It then asks me to "Enter runlevel:," but it never continues booting no matter what I type (just keeps asking me the same thing).

setting init=/bin/sh works, so I can get to the system that way to try and fix things, but I have no idea how to proceed. Any suggestions?

question: have you tried an older kernel?

like 2.4? i dont know if it will help, but you never know....

and did you do a stage 1 (i think you have the best chance of success, even though it will take a load of time....)

but other than that, i dont know what to tell you, aside from maybe checking debian lists (they are a great resource, even though they dont pertain specifically to gentoo, you can adapt most of what you see)

I have a question: are you using reiserfs?

Thanks for the replies.

The computer did run 2.4.x for nearly a year using YDL, but I don't think the kernel's the problem because it had been running 2.6.5 just fine for a few weeks following my Gentoo installation. I started from stage 3 IIRC, but again, it worked for a while, so why not now?

I'm using ext3 and not reiserfs.

In another section of the forum, it was suggested that my inittab is corrupted. So somehow, I need to fix that or reemerge it...
