Help!! I'm going to be completely bald from pulling my hair out if I can't figure this out! I guess I'm more of a noob than I thought :(
Couple questions than may sound dumb:

Is it possible to emerge the kernel form the live cd without a network connection and if so how? Seems to me that for dummies like me that would be the quickest way to be up and running with something that works--if it boots your machine and and you have the ability to configue X for the GUI... that would be sweet for me, anyway.

emerging ppc-development-sources results in ppc-development-sources-2.6.1-r1 in /usr/src/linux yet when you compile the kernel the message at the end of the compile process refers to System.map 2.6.1-benh1...what should one name the kernel to be placed in /boot?

I do the make && make vimlinux modules modules_install

then cp vmlinux to /boot/? (should this be vmlinux or kernel-2.6.1-r1 or 2.6.1-benh1 0r ppc-development-sources-2.6.1-r1 ?) Same question for System.map?

Sorry for the basic questions but I'm a loop here that I can't seem to get out of and I'd really like to get Gentoo up and running. As I've said in earlier posts I've been at this for several months now. I would like to disprove the old adage about teaching old dogs new tricks, but this has certainly been humbling to this point! :(
Thanks for the help in advance!!
Steve

Hi Steve

Er, I guess Starachna didn't realise this is a PPC thread so let me fix a couple of things...

Ben H's PPC patchset (ppc-development-sources) was merged in to the mainstream kernel around 2.6.5, use gentoo-dev-sources or development-sources from now on.
development-sources is the vanilla 2.6 kernel tree, gentoo-dev-sources is the vanilla 2.6 tree with some useful gentoo patches added in.

Code:
emerge gentoo-dev-sources

After compiling the kernel:
Code:
make vmlinux modules && make modules_install

copy the vmlinux and System.map files to /boot
(since I'm currently using development-sources my versions will be different)
Code:

cp /usr/src/linux-foo/vmlinux /boot/vmlinux-2.6.8-rc1
cp /usr/src/linux-foo/System.map /boot/System.map-2.6.8-rc1

Ignore the directory name that the kernel emerges to: in your example name the map file System.map-2.6.1-benh1 .

Now make sure your yaboot.conf uses these files -
the ppc handbook (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml?part=1&chap=9) has all the details.
And finally update the bootloader:
Code:
ybin -v

Hope that clears things up a bit.

ciao
Mark

Whew, I finally have a working Gentoo basic system. Thanks to all who anwered my plea for help!!
I'm sure that I'll have more questions as I work through installing packages. It has been quite a learning experience so far.

Thanks again,
Steve
