What would it take to get Eclipse, hibernate and xdoclet on ppc? If I download eclipse from the eclipse site and then try to run the app, I get "cannot execute binary file" and it's because it was compiled with/for Intel architecture. What options do I have to get it running on Gentoo since there is no Eclipse ebuild for the latest Eclipse version? Also...what about hibernate and xdoclet? Kind of hard to develop. :P Laters, Jeremy

Eclipse 3: It needs Blackdown JDK 1.4.2, which is not yet available for PPC, sorry. Maybe someone can make it work with IBM's JDK, but I'm sticking with Eclipse 2.1.3, which is very stable.

Hibernate: Just emerge it, it should work on ppc.

Xdoclet:
Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" emerge xdoclet
should work, I haven't tried though.

I am not 100% positive but I think you should always be using ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="ppc" or ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~ppc" on the command line or in your make.conf. [ppc] is for stable build stuff and [~ppc] for development or latest stuff as those are the flags for your platform. I am still using the 2.whatever build of eclipse on the IBM jdk however I am re-emerging the development ppc stuff now. I will post back here on what I find out. I am not absolutely positive that the x86 stuff will not work since you are re-compiling stuff. I guess it would depend if the developer wrapped flags around any architecture related items in the package you are emerging. I personally would still only use flags related to my architecture.

Java is java and I'm not sure that the JDK/JRE you use should have an effect on the ebuild. Right now, the only issues I have with downloading the Linux version from Eclipse is that the binary executable isn't compiled for the PPC architecture. I am trying to get word from Eclipse people on how to build Eclipse from source to be built for Linux running on PPC architecture. As soon as I have more information, I'll post. Laters, Jeremy

Here is what the #eclipse forums told me:

Linux + GTK + PPC is already supported in their build script so to run it, go here: http://download2.eclipse.org/downloads/drops/R-3.0-200406251208/srcIncludedBuildInstructions.html#build_platforms

I hope this helps. I'm not at my PowerBook right now but I'll build it tonight and let everyone know how it worked. Laters, Jeremy

I can't take the credit for it but here is a link to walk you through installing Eclipse 3.0 final on Gentoo:

Take care, Jeremy

Did you ever get yours to work? I installed the latest ibm-jdk and then downloaded the eclipse zip. I went through the instructions but ran into a couple of problems.

1) I had to copy my /proc/cpu info into /etc/cpu. That got the java to work.
2) after I compiled the libs that it mentioned and ran eclipse it started to come up and then complained on one of the libs. something about elf not being big endian.

I will go back to square one and try again. maybe i missed a step or something.

I'm a bonehead. I took a look at the makefile for the gtk .so's step and it doesn't clean anything out. I was trying to use libraries that had previously been compiled for the x86 platform. Once I ran the make -f <makefilename> clean the instructions worked perfectly (well minus the /etc/cpu little issue).

Anyway, the ibm jdk 1.4.2 & eclipse 3.0 is successfully working on my 17"pbook. WHOOP!
