This is a total newbie question but the handbook is pretty vague bout this. I am on a dial-up so I must be able to install the packages from the binary packages cd. trying to emerge kde it stops at step 21 says it can't find glib -1.2.10 and stops, attempting to emerge any other individual package from the cd just gives me an unresolved dependency error. Trying to emerge gnome it says there is no such thing. I followed the handbook and after mounting the cdrom did an export PKGDIR="/mnt/cdrom/packages"
I've also done the export PKGDIR="/mnt/cdrom" Doesn't seem to make any difference which, this can't emerge anything!
I enabled the usb serial converter module so as to be able to connect to my serial external modem with either a Belkin or IOGear dongle but I can't even configure ppp without the net-dialup package. Anyone have any ideas on what I may be doing or not doing?

Thanks,
Steve

SOunds like a problem with the kde ebuild. Do you know which part of kde is b0rken? (WHich part of the bundle) And which version of glibc do you have emerged?

I'm going to try a work around. I can open my Gentoo partition from OSX so I'm in the process of copying over the source files from the packages cd to /usr/portage/distfiles then I'll do an emerge and see if I can install kde etc that way.
Thanks,
Steve

Sounds good - when and if you run into any errors, just post the error text verbatim (and the ebuild that failed) and we can work from there.

I placed everything in portage distfiles, but when I attempt an emerge portage attempts to connect to the mirrors and subsequently fails.
How do I get portage to recognize the source files in /portage/distfiles?

turned out I was doing a stupid error--I now have a successful install (mostly). I am now working out a sound and molvconfig issue! But at least the install works.

Thanks

Hi,
I've installed stage3-G3 (networkless) from the 2004.1 liveCD on an G3 iMac (333), and when trying to emerge kde from the package CD I get the same problem - it stops at step 21 saying it can't find glib-1.2.10-r5.

I can't find glib-1.2.10 in the distfiles folder on the liveCD, nor can I find a precompiled package on the package CD.

I have glibc-2.3.2-r9 installed.
I did emerge another version - glib-2.2.3 - from the package CD, which didn't change anything.

Steve: I'm not sure what exactly you did to solve this, is there a way to get glib-1.2 sources from the CDs to /portage/distfiles (without a network connection)?

Alternatively, is there a way to fix the kde ebuild such that it won't require glib-1.2?

Thanks,

lonestar, just do a export PKGDIR=/mnt/cdrom then emerge --usepkg glib

that should allow you to use the source files from the cdrom 'course you should be root when you do the export

hope this helps!

I don't see how that helps: there is no glib-1.2 on /mnt/cdrom, only the later version ( /mnt/cdrom/All/glib-2.2.3.tbz2 ), which doesn't help me.

Anyway, I tried that with no success. It emerges version 2.2.3, and keeps failing when I try to emerge kde.

I am no expert, but I think the problem lies in gtk+-1.2.10-r10, which seems to require glib-1.2.10.

I tried to sabotage gtk+-1.2.10-r10.ebuild so that it will accept the newer version, but for some reason it keeps trying to emerge glib-1.2.

...Ideas?

Problem solved by running:
Code:
emerge inject dev-libs/glib-1.2.10

Boy, is this ugly...
After this, emerge kde worked with no problems. It's now up and running.

I don't think this a "real" solution, something is still wrong in the dependency tree over there.

Anyway, thanks for your help!
