I've downloaded the latest LiveCD (kde-gnome-universal-2004.2.iso) and am able to boot but can't get X to start. After running Xautoconfig, startx complains...
Code:
(EE) Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap
Could not init font apth element unix/:7100, removing from list!

Fatal server error: could not open default font 'fixed'

When I use the older KDE LiveCD (gentoo-ppc-1.4_rc7-kde) I also get an error:
Code:
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration

Fatal server error:
no screens found

...after using Xeasyconfig and entering startx or kdm.

It's been a while but know that the 1.4_rc7 LiveCD used to work... I just can't remember what I had to do to get it to work on my PowerBook G3 (Bronze). :?

Never mind - I rebooted, re-ran Xeasyconf, and started kdm successfully.

Is it possible to install Gentoo directly from the gentoo-ppc-1.4_rc7-kde LiveCD (or do I have to emerge the system from scratch)?

i have never tried (so cannot verify if it is possible) but i would assume that you could get everything you needed off of it.... because if it can run, then it has all the necesary parts.... might take a little hacking and you would probably end up with a VERY unoptimized system....

interesting project though, let us know if it works (and maybe post any specifics that were necesary to get it working...

On the gentoo-ppc-users list I found a link to the 2004.2 Information Guide. According to the 2004.2 Information Guide the 2004.2 LiveCD isn't due until 26-July-04.

I'm telling you that it doesn't work for my PowerBook G3 (Bronze) and that the 2004.2 Project isn't scheduled to be complete until 26-July-04. There's always room for operator error, I suppose.

Hm. I can't find the stages directory of the kde-gnome-universal-2004.2.iso. Are there stages on the kde-gnome-universal-2004.2.iso? :?

Hi all,

I'm actually using the iso right now for some basic things, however some of the issues limit what you can do with it. There are two ways to get X to work - either create a config file with 'X -configure', or set up the X font server (xfs) with TCP support.

The main problem is the missing files - libstdc++.so.5 and libgcc_s are the major ones - only xfce will load and nautilus keeps crashing. The only other thing which would be nice is some of the alsa tools. But at least its usable at the moment for some things.

I would help, however i've only got access to an old clamshell ibook at the moment.

as stated, the kde-gnome-universal live cd is just that, a live cd complete with kde and gnome.... it is not designed as an install disk (though im sure all you need is to grab the stages, portage snapshot, etc from the net)...

if you want to install, download the ppc-universal-install-2004.2 (sorry if i messed the syntax up a little...) and boot from that... then follow the guide... thatll probabky be the easiest....

only console though....

I think part of the confusion over the stage tarballs is that the 'hi' command, which you are asked to run when you first boot, tells you that they are all in /mnt/cdrom/ when it appears that they are not there.
