Ok, I followed the manual and got my system all setup (stage-3) ,no problems booting from the livecd and mounting it. But when i reboot it loads up yaboot and it starts up fine and then cuts to the open-firmware screen and says:
Code:

...ok
copying OF device tree....done
starting cpu /cpus/PowerPC,G4.....failed: 00000000
Initializing fake screen:  ATY,Rage6ag
calling quiesce ...
returning 0x01400000 from prom_init

DEFAULT CATCH!, code=300 at %SRR0: 01403bc8 %SRR1: 00083030

...... and the default powermac open firmware dialog & prompt ........

Im running a Powermac dual G4 (450 mhz), 128 MB Ram, ATI Rage 128 Video Card, 2 partitions, both ext3 linux I hope this helps.

Be nice The only linux ive ever done is debian on a x86, and im pretty new to it.

Try reseting your Open Firmware by doing a Option-Command-P-R during the bootup chime. Then boot up your livecd, chroot in and type the command ybin -v and post any errors if any. Also post your yaboot.conf.

No errors, but a warning :
Code:

fpath:WARNING: Your kernel is too old for proper support, device may be inaccurate

Im using kernel 2.6.7 from the gentoo-dev-sources

And here is my yaboot.conf:
Code:

boot=/dev/hda2
device=/pci@f2000000/pci-bridge@d/mac-io@7/ata-4@1f000/disk0:
partition=4
root=/dev/hda4
timeout=30
install=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot
magicboot=/usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot

image=/boot/kernel-2.6.7
label=linux
sysmap=/boot/System.map-2.6.7
read-only

Did you make sure to compile support for your filesystem as well as necessary dev settings for Gentoo as listed in the install manual?

I installed from a stage 3, I enabled my filesystems in the kernel if thats what your referring to. Im pretty sure i compiled the dev support, what exactly does are you referring to just so i can make sure, i followed the manual about 99% verbatim (except where i didnt need to)

Fixed it. The processor type was wrong in the kernel config.

:oops: For anyone wondering, a powermac g4 is not a power4 processor.
