I've had my slowish little ibook for a while, and have finally decided that I want to try it out in dual boot config... so I repartitioned, stuck osx on the end partition, and started in on the gentoo config...

I initially ran into problems in that I could only use "video=ofonly" to get a normal display, but I'd do that, and it'd work. Without "video=ofonly" or with anything else in there, I'd get a screwed up split and truncated display with some strange lines.

Well, now I'm trying to set up x.org and get it running, wanting to have the gui alive and all, so I tried just starting X with "ofonly" and my screen went psychadelic: slowly pulsating colors, no error messages from X though. Stopping the running x server caused the colors to remain, but to stop pulsating... rendering the laptop unusable except via ssh.

So I've been searching for threads similar to my problem, and having trouble finding any that seem like they might be relevant.

I'm running gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.7-r11, xorg-x11 6.7.0-r1, and screenshots and configs can be found at http://archlich.dyndns.org/ibook

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

this problem has been covered all before....

the solution is, use dri, use radeon driver, but modprobe agpgart, uninorth-agp, and radeon before hand...

heres a link to the entire issue, all covered before.

that thread looked like a different problem to me (x locking versus the display being entirely screwed up) .... but maybe "what's good for the goose is good for the gander" or something like that ...

I'll tinker around a bit with it and see what happens.

EDIT:

So that resolved the initial bootup distortion, but didn't get x actually running...

I still get the psychadelic screen trying to run X though. Alterntely, by tweaking an xorg config option or two, I get both a psychadelic screen and errors saying it can't access the framebuffer device....

I'm going to try rebuilding some other stuff (like x itself for one) and see if its just a borked merge or something, but this is gonna take a while. Any other ideas on things to check/try would be appreciated, in the meantime...

are you using the framebuffer as your video driver?

have you tried the radeon driver...?

I've tried kernel builtin framebuffer support with support, I've tried radeon and radeonfb as modules, I'm just not sure what is going on with it .... I've tried all sorta different yaboot "video=" arguments, I've tried with no args, I've tried not even autoloading but modprobing stuff ... the best results I can seem to muster right now are "it gets a normal looking console, but x starts psychadelic, complete with pulsating colors" ... which is at least progress.

I have been trying to completely rebuild the whole system to see if its a bad x build or a bad build in some lib (and because I wanted nptl support), so my attempts to start x have mostly been delayed by working out kinks with that idea (like glibc not wanting to rebuild, gcc not wanting to build java support, ibm-jdk not wanting to do anything .... I finally settled on turning off java support in apps and separately merging the jdk later.

For now though, sleep is more important than worrying about getting x to run ;).

The problem is your xorg.conf (or whatever XF86Config-4 has been renamed to). Get a proper, working one from zojas' website. Anyone got the URL?
