I have a G4 550 upgraded pismo powerbook which has an ATI Rage 128 (Xeasyconf calls it "Rage Mobility M3 AGP 2x") video card. gl-info reports that direct rendering is enabled, and glxgears says around 440 fps. tuxracer, chromium, and various gl-screensavers seem to work. Any attempt to run these apps w/o the option ForcePCIMode, freezes the system.

But FlightGear 0.9.4 just corrupts the screen and only gets 1 frame per sec. Flighgear.org says that rage128 is a "usable" card. There was no problem compiling flightgear.

I'm using the drm (r128) that came with kernel 2.6.7 (ppc-development kernel). Should I emerge xfree-drm?

Is there something else I need to do to get flightgear to work?

That should be fine, don't install xfree-drm. One thing would be to try running the application in a window instead of fullscreen. I've found that unless the modes are correctly set up, xorg just locks up when switching resolutions on my powerbook.

I am running it in a window. I noticed that running
Code:

 fgfs --enable-fullscreen

just runs flightgear in a maximized window.

I'm using Xorg and I found that running flightgear with the option --disable-specular-highlight prevents the screen corruption/crash. However, it is slow as all hell, peaking at about 3 fps.

How do I run things fullscreen anyway?

You probably want to try this one:
Code:
fgfs --enable-game-mode
