I've got a week-old dual 2.0ghz G5 and I just put Gentoo on it. I'm using a vanilla 2.6.7 kernel (32-bit). Things are working ok, but I've got the usual problem of the fans going like mad in Linux (as opposed to dead silence in MacOS). I configured therm_pm72 as a module in my kernel, but whenever I try to modprobe it, I get an error saying "No such device".

I notice in /proc/cpuinfo that my machine is identified as being a PowerMac7,3, as opposed to the PowerMac7,2 that therm_pm72 says it supports (this is apparently what "pm72" is referring to). I'm guessing that the thermal management hardware has changed enough between 7,2 and 7,3 that the driver doesn't support 7,3. Does anybody else have a PowerMac7,3 G5 and if so have you had any luck controlling the fans? Are there plans to add support for 7,3 macs to the therm_pm72 driver?

I saw something about this recently on the linux-ppc mailing list, so maybe you should search there. I got the impression that it's not "properly" supported yet, but somebody has hacked something for it (not sure what it does).

I've got the same problem! I can't get into the linux-ppc list (time out). I did some "research" (Googled around) and found that their should be a patch around since october for this problem. But still my fans are running at 100%. I've got the 2.6.9-gentoo-r9 kernel. I used the minimal LiveCD 2004.3 from dev.gentoo.org/~tgall/ and when I run the LiveCD the fans are very quiet, the problems start when I boot my own kernel. I used the config from ftp.linuxppc64.org/pub/people/tgall/gentoo-ppc64/
Some advice would be welcome :)
