Code:
configure: error: Fluxbox requires the X Window System libraries and headers.

!!! ERROR: x11-wm/fluxbox-0.9.9 failed.
!!! Function econf, Line 425, Exitcode 1
!!! econf failed
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.

OSX is not based on X11. You may have X11 already installed (highly unlikely) however emerge needs X11 header files to compile fluxbox against.

does anyone know what emerges I need to do exactly? the gentoo wiki only list a few dozen things I can emerge, but I don't want to emerge all of them because it would be a waste...

You need a functioning X ...
So emerge -a Xorg and configure it to work first.

Xorg will open an instance of X windows and then you can run any window manager you like, Fluxbox, gnome, KDE etc.... none of them operate without X installed and operating first.

(Stick to Fluxbox :) )

no but I can't emerge xorg because it is not on the compilable package list here http://www.gentoo-wiki.com/Gentoo_for_Mac_OS_X_Successful_Compiles

those are the only things i can do...i think..

try it anyway
what would it be
ACCEPT_KEYWORD="~osx" emerge . . .
or maybe edit the ebuilds and add osx in the keyword part, I do that kind of stuff all the time

Install Apple's X11, then insert a stub (emerge -i ?) for Xorg. Emerge will think there's an X11, and there will be (just not the one it thinks there is)
