I have a Powerbook G3 Pismo. It has both MacOSX and Gentoo installed on it. I want to mount the hard disk on my Desktop PC, which runs Gentoo of course, using Target Disk Mode. Has anyone else done this, if so, what does it take. I've mucked a bit with it but can't seem to make any progress. Is this even possible?

I have used it a bit, though not in linux.
Target disk mode will turn your book into a big firewire disk. That's all it does. You should be able to plug it into whatever computer that can handle the partition table, and see the partitions, probably as scsi devices.

A problem you will probably run into is that you probably used OSX to do the partitioning. If you didn't compile support for the OSX partition table into the kernel of your x86 machine, you won't be able to read the partition table, even though you would be able to read the partitions, if you could get at them.

Like I said, haven't tried it with linux, so it's a bit of a speculation, but I'm pretty sure that's what will happen.

As an update. I ran gscanbus and it sees my firewire controller and it sees the computer. I have loaded raw1394 (for gscanbus) ohci1394 (for the controller) and SBP2 (for the powerbook disk.) However, I can't seem to figure out where the disk can be accessed. I don't see anything in /dev that looks like what I need. I am running udev.

Do you have support for the MacOS partition table built into your x86 kernel? If you don't, I don't think you'll be able to see the disk to mount.
