During my second reboot after a successful install on my Tibook G4 I experienced a kernel panic towards the end of the boot process:
"attempt to access beyond end of device
hda3:rw=0, want=66, limit=56
isofs_fill_super: bread failed
dev=hda3, iso_bilkumin=16, block=32
size:3,0,56
kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on hda3"

this has me stumped, I checked over fstab and yaboot.conf from my OSX partition to see if I had done something stupid to either but both show root as /dev/hda10 as it should be, I have no idea where hda3 came from!

I hope someone can shed some light on this problem!

I have to say I have learned more than I had imagined from this journey but I really don't want to start over again if I can avoid it!

Steve

Have you check the following in your kernel configuration?
Code:
Platform options ---> Default bootloader kernel arguments

Is it on? Maybe there is a:
Code:
root=/dev/hda3

?? If so, turn it off! ;-)

Hope this helps

Christopher

I now have a working KDE installation, although I have to change the Xscreen to something more readable-I went with the default 8bit and it is ugly! If any one can give me a pointer on how to make the screen resolution more readable I would appreciate it! I also have no sound--but I plan on exploring the sound configuration options next.

The kernel panic was being caused by my oversight in the yaboot file, I commented out the start of the old kernel example rather than deleting the whole thing , including the line referencing hd3 and apparently it was reading that line :roll: As I said this is certainly a learning experience!

Hi,
Have a look at the "screen" section of your x config file (XF86Config-4, xorg.conf or whatever)
Change DefaultDepth to 24 and add/modify

Code:
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes 1024x768
EndSubSection

Restart x and have fun...
as for sound: compile dmasound_pmac (into kernel or as a module) and reboot/load module...
