why get an ibook for osx, when you can install gentoo on it?

and if you crave osx, then use mol....

:)

airport extreme is mainly the reason for os x.
and i guess otherwise a x86 notebook would be much cheaper...

but -- mol is planned to work on mac os x, will install gentoo in there.
or portage on macos if it fullfills my needs somewhen.

my suggestion:

pick up a g3 800 (or 900) mhz laptop used,

for something like 700$

fully hardware supported (except modem)... works on gentoo and osx

and unless you are transmitting stuff over a lan, or you have a DAMN fast internet connection, you are not even goignto notice the difference between airport and airport extreme.

if you feel you need the g4 though, go for it.

ibooks are great.

I'd also recomend a G3 800 MHz. It works great with gentoo, everything works (Airport, Sleep, DVDs, etc.).
Besides...you've used Gentoo...do you REALLY think you'll be able to stay away?

Far to old to be useful for what? I used to have a 233 MHz PowerBook G3 which was damned useful . . . I had no trouble with web-browsing, email, uni assignments (essays and programming ones). The main reason I traded up to the iBook I have now is because the PowerBook was just too heavy. On the other hand, it's nice to finally have a machine with USB ports. :)

Also, as far as colour is concerned, you might be able to make your girlfriend happy by getting a coloured iSkin. I have a neat looking blue one, but they also come in garish bright green and bright pink.
