Today I decided to install my iPod on this box. I searched about the forum and read manuals on how to do a firewire install. After following all the given steps, I still didn't have my iPod connected. I unplugged and replugged my iPod then took a look at my /var/log/messages... it said:

Code:

Aug 18 17:10:49 pwner ieee1394: The root node is not cycle master capable; selecting a new root node and resetting...
Aug 18 17:10:49 pwner ieee1394: Node changed: 0-00:1023 -> 0-01:1023

At boot time it said:
Code:

Aug 18 16:39:12 pwner ieee1394: raw1394: /dev/raw1394 device initialized

Does anyone know how to perform this operation successfully?

Thanks,
PwNeR

What do you mean install your iPod on the box? Do you mean be able to access your iPod from Gentoo?

Could you post what you did? There are lots of tutorials out there.

Also: Is the iPod Mac or Windows formated (HFS+ or FAT)? Did you specify the type when using mount? (mount -t hfsplus /dev/sd....).

All I've done is emerge hotplugging and udev along with the four required kernel modules. My next problem is find out the name of the device and how to mount it. It's a windows formatted iPod ATM.

It's firewire, so it'll show up as a scsi device. If there are no other scsi devices attached, it'll be sda. What I'd do, is:
Code:

#cd /dev
#ls sd*
(plug in iPod)
(wait a few seconds)
#ls sd*
(see which sd? it is)
#fdisk -l sda
(fdisk will print a list of what partitions and what formats are on the disk)

Note that the fdisk thing will only work if it was formated on a PC (can't read mac partition tables)

Let me know the results of this, and we'll see if we can just mount, or if we have to track down some other problems first :-)

I did as you said but nothing came up after "#ls sd*"... Maybe it's not recognizing my firewire card? How would I make it recognize that?
