is it possible to shut down(and turn on) the monitor on my lcd imac via the commandline? I can't use gentoo full time at the moment, because it's in my room, so having the monitor on full time is basicaly like having a light shing in my eyes when I'm trying to sleep.

So I was thinking, that If I knew the command to turn off/on the monitor, I could write a script that would turn off the monitor when I haven't used the comp for like 15 minutes, and reactivate it when I use the mouse/keyboard. Shouldn't be too hard.

Are you using X? If so, open a terminal and type:
Code:
xset dpms force off

If it works, excellent, you can script it. If not you may need to recompile your kernel. There is an excellent site on Gentoo and powermanagement which is sure to help:

I tried all the following to get the LCD on my cube to turn off. None worked. The best I get is with the first, where the light stays on and the LCD imags melts into random vertical bars. This is the behaviour of the most current xorg-x11 with no screen save running.[/code]

Code:

bash-2.05b$ xset dpms force off
bash-2.05b$ setterm -powerdown 1
bash-2.05b$ setterm -blank 1
