Hello,

I have tried several times to do the bootstrapping process on my PowerBook G4 Titanium 400 MHz. For some reason each time it stops somewhere in the process. Can anyone please send me a working make.conf for this machine? Thanks in advance.

PS I use the 2004.1 LiveCD

PS I found on the internet these CFLAGS, are they ok for me?

CFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=7400 -maltivec -mabi=altivec -pipe -fsigned-char -mpowerpc-gfxopt -ffast-math -fomit-frame-pointer"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
CHOST="powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu"

I think it has to do with the heat produced during compiling. I have the feeling that my internal fan is broken. Is there some program available whoch allows me to check if the fan is working or not?

The only problem I had installing Gentoo on my PB G4 400Mhz was that reiserfs did not work.

I will post my make.conf as soon as I get to my PB.

Btw, look on my site: http://www.rockhopper.dk/linux/powerbook/index.html for alot of information about the PB G4 400Mhz

I believe that -fomit-frame-pointer is implied by -O2. -mpowerpc-gfxopt is considered "aggressive" and has been known to cause problems (with gcc 3.2.x, so YMMV.) -fsigned-char will not make anything go faster, in fact I believe it is the default. (If it's not, it will cause problems with code that relies on char being unsigned.)

I don't know if your Powerbook has a 7400 or 7450 CPU. Check by running "cat /proc/cpuinfo". You may want to adjust the -mcpu= parameter accordingly. (It might be something like 7455 or 7457, but gcc only accepts 7400 or 7450 for G4 CPU types. Just use the closest one.)

linuxopjemac: This utility will display the values reported by the temperature sensors in your Mac: http://www.bresink.com/osx/HardwareMonitor.html It will also give you fan RPM data and other stuff if you pay for it. It only runs in OS X, but if your failure is temperature-related you should be able to reproduce it by doing something computationally intensive, like running the distributed.net client. http://www1.distributed.net/download/clients.php
