I booted my wife's 17 inch iMac from the 1.4 live CD, so i could (try to) use distcc to speed up the install on my 800MHz iBook.

The iMac won't boot into OSX now. If I boot into the OSX installer disk, and open disk-utility, the HD doesn't even show up.

Has anyone had this sort of problem with the live CD? (I realize that live CD may be a bit old, but it's the one I already had burned)

I'm now pretty sure that the HD is dying. /dev/hd? doesn't show up in linux for it either, and the Apple support guy said he'd bet on it being the drive too. I was able to get it to boot by restarting it again and again, till the HD worked this once (some awefull scratching sounds when it started spinning though...)

Thanks,

~Michael

yeah, this has happened to me, and It plauged me for 3 mo

anyway, what you need to do is go back into the Live Cd, open up mac-fdisk, and create a new Apple Partition map Partion thingy. then boot off the OSX cd and install

I think thats how I fixed it, its been a while
