hey

im gonna be getting a new laptop soon, and i was planning on getting a 12" ibook/powerbook (depending on budget) and i would like to know of other users experiance with them (linux related)
a few points
- i am new to macs (not to linux)
- im not realy interesting in high power work, im gonna be using it for univeristy stuff
- i ahve never used mac OS X (for more than 3mins)

what are peoples xperiances especaly on areas such as
- media players
- dual booting
- playing starcraft in MOL
- battery life
- cd burning
- working with ipods
- external monitor support
- hardware accel in linux (from what i can tell its imposible)
- dvd playing
- ACPI (if it supports it) or APM
- how well native mac softwere run on MOL
- wether mol supports mac os X h/w acell
- is there any way of getting windoze apps to run on linux ppc, using some sort of emulator
thanx for all your help

I, like many others in this forum, suggest an iBook 800mhz (G3 processor) or 900mhz (G3 as well). They offer the best bang for buck, have fully supported wireless networking (Airport, not Airport Extreme which does not yet work under linux), and have ATi graphics which work well under linux. They are plenty fast and have great battery life.

Media players: all the same ones as x86 linux (Real, Mplayer, Xine, etc)

Dual booting is easy, I do it every day.

Never tried Starcraft. In Mol it would likely be pretty slow (no hardware accelerated graphics in MOL)

Battery life on G3 iBooks is at least 4 hours, more like 5.

CD burning works great.

No idea about linux, but iPods obviously work excellent w/ macs.

DVD playing is fast, smooth, etc

We have something called pbbuttonsd(sleep, etc) and cpudynd (dynamic CPU speed switching based on processor load) which are like APM, as well as APM compatibility.

These iBooks have ATI cards which work well w/ XFree.org. Avoid NVidia on PPC (no drivers)

Multi- monitorson iBooks works well under linux and can be enabled in OS X with a hack.

Mol is near full speed for software, games however require hardware graphics, which MOL hides from OSX

Virtual PC for OSX is reasonably fast for emulation (1000x faster than Bochs!) and can be run under MOL/OSX.

BTW, an 800-900mhz iBook will cost way less than $1000, and will run OS X.3 beautifully.

I have an iBook G4 800Mhz.

You will have less battery autonomy with linux than OSX.

For example, I can watch DVD for 3h15 min under OSX, only 1h30 with Xine on Gentoo. But you can wtch DVD from any zone using Xine (you can't with an iBook G4).

CD rippers are soooo slooooow. They don't use altivec. It takes more than 30 minutes to encode a CD in MP3 with grip (against five minutes with iTunes in OSX).

IPod works quite well with gtkPOD.. You can't access the iTMS though. Be careful not to sync your iPod on OSX after using it under Linux : you loose all your music.

Hardware accel under linux is ok. I have a better frame rate using glxgears on my iBook ATI than on my PC (GeForce2 MX400).

go with the g3, i have an 800mhz one.

works beautifully.

sleep works, accelerated graphics (i get around 550 fps in glxgears), airport, good battery. no modem, but i bought an external one.

but this is a major dupe. this question has been asked and answered at least 4 or 5 times already.

the longest one i think is by cayenne called "choosing the best bang for buck laptop".... look for it.

and searcht he forums before you post please.
