Well I excitedly downloaded the iso and burnt it on My iBook G4 1Ghz. Then checked the image had burnt OK.

Then came the time to boot it. no problems :-) Now here's where the fun starts. If I let the booter select G4 on its own I get presented with a blank screen :-( Now if make the booter hang around and then select the G4 kernel I get a semi sucessful boot to the command prompt :-|

So then I try and start X..... DOH!!! Fatal Server Crash.... Why I wonder. I inspect the .conf file and discover that none of the usual fontpaths are in the .conf file.

Instead of the usual Files section which should look like this :-

FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/"

It looked like this:-

FontPath UNIX:7100

So I changed the .conf to the oldstyle and hey presto can at least boot into X :-)

So then I try GDM, Great it loads up except whats the root/user password?

1. Are users of the 2004.2 ppc live cd really expected to stop their Apple from booting for a few seconds and force a manual kernel load (even though the correct kernel is already the default?)

2. Do I really have to mess around with the Fonts config in the X.org .conf file everytime I want to boot?\

3. Since the root password is scrambled each time the LiveCd loads must I really create a User before running GDM?

If all of the above are true that's just plain silly, How do I convince people that Linux is a good alternative to Windoze/MacOS when I have to jump through this many hoops just to get to a graphical login on an unwriteable LiveCD......

I thought the whole point of a LiveCD is to show off the power of Linux, not make it look difficult to the average Joe. It's probably me just being stupid but come on people we are living in 2004! It really shouldn't be this hard to boot into a GUI..... Xerox came up with the first GUI very nearly 30 YEARS AGO for pity's sake.

thingi

p.s. I'm not worried about root security, Airport extreme isn't even supported under linux yet..........(or ever for that fact - thanks very, very much broadcom)
