i was wondering if anyone had gotten this running on ppc?

after spending 5 hours downloading 6.7.99.903 (dialup  ), it compiles for about 1 hour 50 minutes before dying.

this is on an 800 mhz g3 ibook, w/ 640 mb ram.

has anyone gotten it to compile? and if so, what archs/gcc/ anything else important.

i was eye candy :)

I`m trying to emerge x11-xorg (6.7.0, 6.7.99.903,6.7.99.904), but all of them fault with the same error during the /usr/tmp/portage/xorg-x11-6.7.99.904/work/xc/programs/xcursorgen compilation.

I think the problem is gcc-3.4. There are posts all over this thread from people who had problems while using that compiler.

I personally have tried to get xorg-x11-6.8.0 to work on three different architectures using gcc-3.4: amd64, ppc, and x86. It compiles on all three but doesn't run on any of them. I tried to compile the new xorg on x86 with gcc-3.3 and it didn't even compile. I don't know what the deal is but I have given up for the time being. :(

I had the same Segmentation fault during the compile of xcursorgen. I found the solution on the gentoo-ppc mailinglist:
You will need to reemerge libpng with -fno-strict-aliasing in your CFLAGS.
Code:
CFLAGS="-fno-strict-aliasing" emerge libpng

After that everything compiled fine for me and I am now running Xorg 6.8.0. So far it seems just as fast as 6.7 but I haven't activated the composite extension yet.

Good luck!

thanks, i had it building fine, but it wouldnt start, thanks to this, now it does (and im using firefox in it right now)...

however, i have a couple of issues. composite does not work ( no eyecandy :( ) and things take forever to start up. even things as simple as xterms. i just timed it, and my xterm took 15 seconds to start. thats crazy i used to have it close to a second. xterms seem to be the worst, but other things take a lot longer than with 6.7....
[EDIT]
found out it was a font issue, and its fixed by running fc-cache.... seems pretty simple, now everything is fine.
hope that helps someone else out
[/EDIT]

I can't get it to work either
I have both Composite and RENDER enabled in my xorg.conf and my log says
Code:
(II) Initializing built-in extension COMPOSITE

But then when I try to run xcompmgr I get:
Code:
No composite extension

I had the same problem, in my case it was a cursor issue since I was using custom cursors. A simple strace showed that xterm was trying to load the cursors but couldn't find them and was stuck in a loop for half a minute.

my problem is a little different. when i load the extensions, it hard locks. so i dotn even get to test it out.

sucks too, because i hate rebooting my machine.

I've got it working on an ibook G3 800.
There are some problems, but all in all it works fine here. RenderAccel seems to be broken with the new release though and you should switch it off in your xorg.conf, especially if you want to run xcompmgr -c. (Most of the time I just get a green blur around the windows instead of a nice shadow with RenderAccel enabled)

If anyone is interested, here is the relevant part of my config:

Code:

Section "Device"
Identifier  "Card0"
Option "UseFBDev"
Option     "EnablePageFlip" "true"
Option  "RenderAccel" "false"
Option  "backingstore"
Driver      "radeon"
VendorName  "ATI Technologies Inc"
BoardName   "Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]"
BusID       "PCI:0:16:0"
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
Option  "Composite" "true"
EndSection

Hmm, seems that I have some difficulties getting it up and running as well. My whole system is compiled with -fno-strict-alias, so I can assume that libpng is not the problem. Actually, when I run startx the X server crashes with signal 11. The log doesn't say much.. Argh, I can not dump it cause I can't access my Linux partition from OS-X :-(

Maybe somebody has any blind and wild guesses how I can fix it? Oh, almost forgot, it's a 1G TiBook...

Thanks heaps. At least my X is up and running again! Unfortunately, evilwm (my favorite window manager) crashes now :-( Back to Gnome, I reckon? At least for a while...

The shadows and transparency work on TiBook??
