you don't need the whole samba server to mount shares :) it's very simple:

1. compile, but do no install. make a package instead:
Code:
emerge -B
samba

2. go to /usr/portage/packages/All
Code:
cd /usr/p... you know what to do
:D

3. find samba-X.Y.Z.tbz2 and extract 3 files:
Code:
sbin/mount.smbfs
usr/bin/smbmount
usr/bin/smbmnt

4.
Code:
cp smb* /usr/bin
cp mount.smbfs /sbin
mkdir /etc/samba
touch /etc/samba/smb.conf

i did it right now and it works fine :) hope it helps 8)

Code:
mount -a -t smbfs
generates:
Code:
creating lame upcase table
creating lame lowcase table (..)
but it shouldn't be a problem, because "/etc/init.d/netmount" redirects the output to /dev/null.

now you can delete this package.
if there's any mistake please tell me.

Hi,

I always hated that I had to install the whole package on the clients. This is a way to go. Maybe there'll be an ebuild for smbmount some time later :)

Thanks

mic
