Ok.. I've tried for a week to get gentoo to successfully install on my G5 and have been a forum slave since then.. maybe it's time I joined as a member and post?
Ok.. here's my problems thus far:
When my computer boots off of the livecds, it can't detect my ethernet card.
Code:
net-setup eth0
works, but the 2004 ppc64 live cds don't seem to have net-setup on them >_<
I tried booting from the 2004.1 livecd for just general ppc computers, and installing from the stages from the ppc64 website... except I can't chroot... it gives a "command error" with the shell I want to use (I've tried /bin/bash and /bin/sh)
I tried with the ppc stage 1 packages (downloaded from a few mirrors in case there was a corrupt package somewhere). Setting -mcpu=G5 in my CFLAGS I believe was one of the things that caused my c compiler to not be able to produce executeable files. I tried setting it to powerpc64, but it failed during emerge sync. Setting it to powerpc got me a bit further, but still to no avail.
I'm also a little worried that the livecd cannot shut down my system properly. I get a message something along the lines of "Nothing more to do on this runlevel" Oh.. and unzipping the stage had a few problems in /dev.. =/
On the bright side, dual G5's speed along fast enough to get to the errors reeeeaaaaly quickly ^_~
(P.S. my ultimate goal is to have a partition for OS X, a partition for Gentoo, a partition that will be mounted as /Users under OS X and /home under gentoo, a partition that will be mounted as /var/mail under both operating systems, and a Swap partition that will be used under both operating systems. This will let me have my mail and personal files accessable under my profile under both operating systems, essentially treating OS X as another X environment as far as I'm concerned ^_^ Any problems you could warn me about that you know I will run into in the future... i.e. I got Swap to run on a partition under OS X 10.3, but it requires the useage of an HFS or UFS file system, whereas the livecd requires it to be the "swap" filesystem. If I add HFS readability to my kernel, will I be able to use the partition in linux as HFS or UFS?)

Thanks for sharing your experience with this n00b ^_^

Hmmm... I tried downloading the 2004.2 CD from bit torrent, and G5 (w/ or w/o SMP) kernel loads but then the screen goes blank and my compuer sounds like it's taking off (I know.. the takeoff can be normal until the kernel is built for my own system, but the not being able to see what's on my computer really suxx0rs) Any developers know if this might be because I'm using an apple cinema display?

2004.2 CDs are complete trash for G5's... there was already quite a few posts on this topic. We all have the same prob as you. I ended up installing with the 2004.1 cd. If you download the 2004.2 stages, etc. the final result will be the same as if you could get the 2004.2 CD to work.

Well.. my ideal was a 64 bit system, so I decided to try one more time. I thought I'd post a complete log on how I did everything once I finished, but as of now I'm working on a 64 bit SMP install =p
I basically had to do a hack where I went thru installing with 2004.1 up untill downloading stages and got the ppc64 2004.2 stages from tgall's website, but then I had to reboot and re-chroot from his 2004.2 CD because the 2004.1 ppc cd is a 32 bit system, so you can't run his 64 bit binaries (the exec error I was getting), but his cd is VERY minimal, and doesn't include links2 =/
Right now I'm about to go check the forum for any advice about my problem getting libstdc++v3 to emerge... it's killing my bootstrapping =/
