ok i downloaded the PPC version of Gen-Too (because it was the smallest since im just trying it out) and i inserted the cd and restarted holding Command-Option-Shift-Delete..(which i am supposed to hold for a powerbook 1400) and no installer comes up instead it says "EXTENTIONS DISSABLED" and then when it boots it says "are u sure u want to rebuild the desktop" instead.. so i clicked yes and it like restored all of its system files to new or original.. ive tried it many times with the same results..

is it just not reading my CDROM or what?

BTW: I have a powerbook 1400/166 currently running OS 7.6.1

help?

[edit]..y isn't my sig working..i didn't add those numbers..

try holding down 'c' or option, one of those will work, for an open firmware machine.
I dont know if that powerbook has it or not, dont think so.

PowerBook 1400 is an old-world system, and thus requires bootx. There's a little about it in the handbook, search this section of the forum, and look at enrique's page at www.rockhopper.dk

Yes, on a G4 that works - its a new-world system. The old-world macs (every pre-G3, and a few of the early G3 models too) don't do this, and need to use an app called bootx from inside MacOS to boot a linux kernel.

I'll ask again if we can get a sticky detailing this stuff, as I'm really sick of repeating it. I'll even write it if one of the mods contacts me and I know It'll be made permanent.

IT WON'T BOOT FROM THE CD EVER

Sorry for shouting but, for the third time in this thread, you need to use bootx from within MacOS.

Old-World Macs do not boot from any cd but MacOS ones.

Get bootx, read it's instructions, and the ppc specific handbook, and enrique's page I linked above will probably help.

Is this within macos?

you need the system booted, and if you can get net access to this machine, download it directly, or stick the cd you've burned it to into the drive and it should automount and appear on the desktop. If it doesn't, then it doesn't like the cd and/or the format its written in - older macs tend to be a bit finicky about that.

If you want your hand holding any more than that, I seriously suggest you look at Yellow Dog (version 3.x as I suspect the 4.0 release candidates won't run on an old world mac).

Linux on old-world macs is in general poorly documented, poorly supported, and getting more difficult as they come closer to total obsolesence
