Hi there, just wanted to throw this out there and see it it helps people. I'm switching from XFree86 to Xorg on a few computers and I was concerned about down time. On my home computer it doens't really matter, I just

Code:

emerge -C xfree

and then

Code:

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge  /usr/portage/x11-base/xorg-x11/xorg-x11-6.8.0.ebuild

but here at work I don't want the down time, so I'm doing an

Code:

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge  usr/portage/x11-misc/ttmkfdir/ttmkfdir-3.0.9-r2.ebuild

for the deps and then

Code:

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -BO /usr/portage/x11-base/xorg-x11/xorg-x11-6.8.0.ebuild

which should build the binary package after which I can emerge -C xfree and then emerge the xorg from the prepard binary. There are also 2 more packages, sys-apps/utempter-0.5.5.5 and x11-terms/xterm-196 which you can do the same pre building for.

To install from binaries you just need to set your PKGDIR, probably in your make.conf and then use the -K switch for emerge.

Hope this helps (and works, I'm doing it right now).

Also, I know the ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" is the old and bad way of doing things, the right way is to throw stuff into the packages.keyword (or something similar) file, but old habits die hard.
