i'm getting a firewire/usb enclosure, whats the best format for my drive?
i'd like something more robust than fat32, but compatible across linux-mac at least and windows support too would be nice, but not entirely neccessary, as i dont use windows

if you want windows and anything else, you're stuck with fat 32. WIndows only likes fat (too big a hard drive for fat) fat 32, and ntfs (not very well supported on other systems)
If you want it to work well on mac and new versions of unix, go with either HFS or HFS+. OS X only likes those and fat32 (but those systems don't have the restriction of all files needing to be 4GB or smaller -- something that killed me when I wanted to make a backup image on my removeable hard drive.
