ok.. I'd like to eventually be able to surf the web, but I'm having some problems...
Iemerged mozilla w/o a problem, but it won't run (I think I remember hearing about that b4).
mozilla-firefox doesn't work, it gives an error after a good long time (gmake error).
I can't emerge gnome because even tho I emerged the proper version of mozilla to satisfy its dependency, it still ignores it and says there's no masked or unmasked way to satisfy the dependency.
KDE has a problem with cyclical masked dependency checking
So.. how does a poor fluxbox user actually surf the web??

Hmm, I was able to emerge firefox without a problem... have you tried both the ppc and ~ppc versions? How about just checking at their website and seeing if you can grab it as a tarball?

what's the difference between "ppc" and "~ppc" ??
I tried emerging (my make.conf says "ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~ppc" ") and I got a gmake failure. I tried emerging mozilla-firefox-bin and it emerged, but the file won't run (perhapse casue I'm on a 64 bit system?)

What do you mean "the file won't run"?

Something like:
Code:
bash: /path/to/firefox: cannot execute binary file

Or something else?

The "ppc" ebuild keyword tells portage to use the stable version of that particular package. The ~ppc key word tells portage to use the unstable version of that package. Since it seems you set your make.conf to use unstable packages by default maybe you should try the stable version?

Try reading this excellent tutorial.

I generally use firefox 0.9.3, but sometimes konqueror (from kde 3.3.0). Both work fine on my iBook.

It'd be nice if someone fixed the java problem though. I've heard that Opera can do java on linuxppc.

KDE actually emerged after setting the right keywords. Thanks everybody so much for your help ^_^ Now I can at least use konqueror while firefox is emerging
Man.. I love this system. Full KDE emerge in less than 10 hrs ^_^ It took my pentium4 2.2Ghz 24 hrs when I wasn't even in an xsession. This time I was running fluxbox and emerging 3 other things at the same time >_<

Are you on a 64 bit system? I tried both ppc and ~ppc and neither of them worked..

my system =
dual 2.0Ghz G5 (64bit)
1.5 GB of 400Mhz DDR SDRAM
250GB 7200RPM SATA HD
ATI Radeon 9800Pro
23" Apple Cinema Display
4x DVD-R burner

Not bad for my first mac, huh? ^_^
Either way, it's a 64 bit system, which means that some program's wont work on it.. Hers' my gmake error on firefox I get w/ both the "ppc" and "~ppc" keywords (GRAAAR.. why won't XTERM let me use CTRL+C CTRL+V??)

Code:

Damn, that's some serious horsepower.

I didn't know you were running a G5. They're might be ~ppc64 and ppc64 keywords but I can't remember. I don't think it matters anyways since if you couldn't get the normal ppc version to compile I doubt the 64bit version would work. Have you tried searching Bugzilla?

I think you just have to highlight to "copy", and middle-click to "paste". ;)

(Note: I suggested clicking with the wrong button originally. Edited after zojas' post to avoid confusing people....)

highlight, then click with the middle mouse button to paste. (NOT the right mouse button). if you only have two mouse buttons, set

Code:

Option      "Emulate3Buttons"  "yes"

in the InputDevice section for your mouse in your /etc/X11/XF86Config file, restart X, then press the left and right mouse buttons simultaneously to simulate the middle mouse button, and paste.

if you have only one mouse button, there is a kernel config item which allows you to designate keys on the keyboard to emulate the second and third mouse buttons. the install handbook tells you how to do that.

:!:
don't do simultaneous separate emerges. if they get to the merge step at the same time, you can corrupt things, and may have to re-install.

there is a variable called 'MAKEOPTS' in /etc/make.conf which you can set to, for example, '-j3' to ask portage to ask make to fire off three simultaneous compiles. this allows you to utilize both cpus while just emerging one package at a time.

Just FYI

Code:
USE="X directfb fbcon jpeg png tiff java javascript" emerge links

Then run links with -g, and it'll be pretty graphical.
Dillo works OK also.
