I have rebuilt my G3 ibook Gentoo's installation from scratch, installing (I think) all of the elements necessary to get transparency to work with xorg-x11. However, if I add the "Extensions" section below ...

Code:

# Composite Extensions and stuff
Section "Extensions"
        Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

X starts, Gnome logs in, but any window that is shown makes X crash out and come back to the GDM login.

So what am I doing wrong? Can I even do this? :?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Hm, I got composite working on my ibook 800. However there are some setbacks. Transparency is so slow that it is simply unusable and if X is running with 24 or 16 color depth you have to turn of RenderAccel (wich is turned on by default with the radeon drivers) if you want to use xcompmgr -c, or you'll not get nice shadows but just a green blur. Just running xcompmgr (without any arguments) to get a double buffered desktop generally works fine, though I do notice some slowdowns in konqueror after switching desktops.

So yes, it is doable, but as far as I can tell it is not really worth the effort right now. I know this doesn't really help you right now, maybe you could post your xorg.conf so that others can see what might be the problem.

I unmerge metacity 2.8.4 and emerged 2.8.3. This has its own composite manager (or whatever its called), and the transparency and shadows are there, it all looks cool (moving a window makes it transparent, windows have shadows, menus look cool), however it runs as slow as slow dog without legs.

So the results are a big pro (its cool  ), but a much bigger con (its really, really, really slow  )

Oh well, never mind!

does your ibook have ati or nvidia graphics?

if nvidia, you need to turn on the renderaccel option, do a forum search for this

No, RenderAccel will bring practically nothing for iBooks with nvidia graphics (are there any?), because the binary nvidia drivers are x86 only.

I built 6.8, added that line to the config however X refuses to start stating that it cannot find the composite extension.

I know this is old, but it's "Composite" not "composite"
