I recently upgraded from X and kernel 2.4.24 to 2.6.7 and Xorg. Unfortunately, DRI still only limps sadly on my G4 550 pismo powerbook (Rage 128 AGP 2X) and trying to play video turn my screen into a strange tie-dyed pattern. Many 3D apps (molecule screen saver for example) flicker badly but work. I'm using the ForcePCI option because w/o it the Xorg server locks up. (I can still ctrl-alt-backspace.)

Flightgear works tolerably under OS X, giving around 15 fps in 640x480x16bpp, but I can scarcely get 2 fps in gentoo 1024x768x16, the only mode I can get a usable X display. Now, I can't even get a working modeline for 640x480. I am unsure of the correct H/V sync values for pismo's LCD. I tried values found in people's powerbook XF86Configs posted in these forums, but most of the utils I have tried just spit out numbers that don't work when I plug them into Xorg.conf. xvidtune seems to do nothing, it doesn't even corrupt my display. (800x600 almost works but is way off center, using only about 2/3 of the screen.)

mplayer will work satisfactorily with divx and mpeg AVIs if I force it to use x11 video only. kaffeine just goofs up my screen.

Sorry to ramble on--I guess my main questions are:

1. How can I get working modelines for 800x600 and 640x480? i.e. specs for pismo LCD at the very least and maybe a good, easy modeline calculating utility?

2. Is there some Xorg.conf Option voodoo to get 3D working smoothly?

The way I get DRI working with kernel 2.6.x is to compile everything DRI-related into the kernel. Mind you, I have a TiBook with a Radeon 7500.

For my Tibook that is:
Code:

  - Device drivers
    -> Character devices:
      -> AGPGART
      -> DRI Radeon (or in your case RAGE128)

    -> Graphics support
      -> Support for frame buffer device
        -> Radeon display support (in your case Rage128 display support)

If I compile agpgart and DRI as a module I don't get hardware accelerated 3D support. With kernel 2.4, I didn't have this problem.

In my xorg.conf file, under section "Device" I also have to set
Code:
   Option   "UseFBDev"   "True"

Otherwise the graphics card will lock up when I try to switch between X and the virtual consoles.

You can check your DRI status with
Code:
 glxinfo | grep "direct rendering"

If it says "Yes", you're set.

Wouter ;-)
