I could get a iBook 600Mhz G3 for cheap or free (its my dads) Will gentoo run reasonaly faster than x or 9? X is too slow for me and 9 is too unstable. I like gnome much better than kde and will be using that. How is the stage 1 install on an iBook G3. i do a bunch of developing for java in college and will be using it for that. I also have a G5 as my main computer.

let me know thanks!

KDE and Gnome both seem to run relatively slow on my powerbook g4 (1 GHz: 768mb ram) as compared to osx. Maybe that's just me, but there's definitely a slowdown on my machine.

Hi,

I have an iBook G3 700MHz. I find Gentoo with my favorite window manager, WindowMaker, much faster than OS X.

Note that provided you have a lot of RAM (at least 256MB...) you can run OS X in Gentoo Linux (should you need to) via Mac-on-Linux (a.k.a. mol). That way you have a fast environment and still have OS X if you want to play with it.

Note: In case the JDK matters, Sun's JVM is not available for Linux/PowerPC. You will need to consider IBM JDK or other VMs. OS X does use Sun's JVM.

Note: It is not the fastest machine to compile large apps but it is fine.

Yes, I am writing this on my iBook G3 600 MHz right now. I use fluxbox window manager and it runs fine, much faster than OS X. Firefox loads faster in linux and is more stable than in OS X. I am emerging ibm java right now because I too need to program with java. I'm not sure how well blackdown java will work though. I've never used it for programming before. I went to the blackdown site, I didn't see any about info. Is it just a GPL implementation of Java for linux?

i guess im a little late, but here's my 2 cents...

i have it on my 500mhz ibook (dual-usb) with 576mb ram, and it is MUCH faster than osx... i cant watch divx in osx, it's too choppy (tried mplayer, vlc, ...), but in gentoo with a 2.6 kernel, i have no probs... i am running gnome 2.8, it's a bit slower than xfce4, but not too bad.. i did a stage 1, compiling takes a LONG time =) i do miss some things from osx (painless wireless/vpn/flash), but i havn't booted osx in months...

good luck

This thread put me in a great mood.

I too, am a recent almost convert to PPC Gentoo.

I have a G3 iBook on the way and am excited to give it a go.

How does running OS X in MoL compare to running it normally? How usable is it? Do many people use it as the Flash playing fallback? iTunes?

OS X boots twice as fast (1 min) in Mol than natively (2 min). I think the speed is more an issue with memory available, you need to fit 2 OSes... and of I/O. For example, apps intensive on video card, well OS X inside mol does not have direct access to video card... Forget about playing 3D games :)

I avoid Flash things whenever possible.
