I've been running the 2.6.7 kernel successfully for some weeks now, but recently after starting my system (Beige g3 desktop), a number of libraries fail to load at startup, like libpcre.so.0. As a consequnce a number of services fail to load. Almost nothing works and although my path is set, no excutable can be found unles I give the full path, so I can't even emerge. I can boot into my old copy of the 2.4 kernel and life is good. But what can I do?
TIA

You wouldn't happened to have upgraded gcc or glibc recently
and recompiled some of those library with this new version by
any chance?

Yes, I upgraded to gcc 3.4, I believe.

Did you also emerge libstdc++_v3? There is some incompatibilities
I think between the libstdc++ from gcc3.4.1 and the one before gcc3.4
and that you may need that package for backward compatibility.
But then again that doesn't explain why you can work under a
kernel 2.4 unless that is something a kernel 2.4 system doesn't
need....
Could you provide the bit of the file /var/log/messages that
correspond to an attempt to boot 2.6.7 unsuccessfully.
You need to be root to read that file, and there is a lot of stuff
to dig out. Post only suspicious entry from the time you tried to
boot 2.6.7. You don't need to boot in 2.6 to do it which is probably
a good thing for you.

Thanks for the reply, but since there was not any data on this computer, I decided to blow it away and start from scratch.
