Hi,

I'm having a problem here.

I have a 2.4.17 kernel boot floppy with that I successfully cross compiled and it boots well, but I don't know how to make the firmware use the 2004.1 live CD as root disk.

Please, I need such little help to start installing Gentoo 2004.1 on my little B50 and give them life again.

If I cannot put Gentoo on them I will give-up...

Hmm. If you can boot from a floppy you could conceivably chroot to the LiveCD to do the install...

But I don't have a root floppy, just the kernel floppy.

Where I can take a PPC Gentoo 2004.1 root floppy ??

I'm trying to load the kernel and make him use the cdrom as root floppy.

Ah, I see.

What I could find on google suggests that if your BIOS can't boot from CD-ROM, then you'd need drivers for your specific CD-ROM drive to do this... making it really quite complicated.

So, I'm not sure what to suggest :?

No, actually, that's not my problem. I'll try to be more clear.

I can boot the linux kernel from floppy, throught the OpenFirmware with a basic command like this:

boot floppy:,zimage

But, I don't know what are the needed kernel parameters I need to use with a kernel 2.4.17 to make him look for the root disk on the Gentoo 2004.1 PPC CD. I've tryed a lot of optins whitout success.

You mean like 'root=/dev/hdd'?

Or hda, hdb, hdc...

Yep, but root=/dev/something is not suffice.

load_initrd, initrd=**, load_ramdisk=1, etc... all of these probably are needed, but I don't know how to work on this with the Gentoo 2004.1 PPC LiveCD.

Any idea ?

no init found

boot cdrom:,\boot\phoenix root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc initrd=/boot/initrd.img.gz load_ramdisk=1

no init found

boot cdrom:,\boot\phoenix root=/dev/scd0 init=/linuxrc initrd=/boot/initrd.img.gz load_ramdisk=1

no init found
