atom: if you're happy with proprietry drivers, why not just use OS X or OpenDarwin with the OS X drivers? If all I wanted was to be able to use my hardware, I would just use OS X.

I want to use my hardware with Free Software, and I think Apple can and should exert some pressure on their suppliers to make this possible.

i do use os x and i think its a great operating system. i was just pointing out it would probably be easier to convince the graphics companies to release closed source. insisting on only running free software has the problem of not always getting full support for everything. its a trade-off that has to be made. i agree it would be great if apple would put some pressure on hardware manufacturers, but apple itself isnt completely open source. look at the os x interface and applications. they may not have much interest in putting pressure on the hardware companies as then people may put pressure on them.

I agree with you that in the current market, insisting on only running Free Software does have the problem that some things may not be supported.

However, for those of us who want to run 100% Free Software setups, proprietry drivers are not a "trade-off", they are a failure. This is why I am more interested in talking about access to documentation rather than talking about whether Apple should write drivers for Linux.
