I spent about a week this summer trying to get sound working on my B&W G3, and was finally able to get alsa going. I just upgraded to 2.6.7-r14 gentoo dev source, and now alsa isn't working. I have followed all the guides around as to how to conf my kernel, and the best I can do is get a clicking noise from the speaker when I adjust the master level in alsamixer. These are the modules I have loaded:

Code:

Module                  Size  Used by
snd_pcm_oss            65448  0
snd_mixer_oss          22144  1 snd_pcm_oss
mol                    60800  0
i2c_dev                12384  0
snd_seq                63932  0
snd_seq_device          9736  1 snd_seq
snd_powermac           38924  0
snd_pcm               114008  2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_powermac
snd_page_alloc         12840  1 snd_pcm
snd_timer              28036  2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd                    66264  7 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_powermac,snd_pcm,snd_timer
hfsplus                65540  0

I currently have the alsa drivers loaded as a module. I also have the I2C-dev module and keywest modules compiled, but neither of them seems to help. I have also tried reemerging the alsa-utils and alsa-libs packages. Any ideas?

Also, what are people's experiences with the current kernels available? What's the best choice for a mail server that needs to be somewhat stable?

Thanks

I have the same kernel, the list of the modules I have loaded
on my iMac G4 looks like this
Code:
Module                  Size  Used by
hfsplus                65124  1
i2c_keywest            11364  0
snd_powermac           36460  0
snd_pcm               114008  1 snd_powermac
snd_page_alloc         12840  1 snd_pcm
snd_timer              28036  1 snd_pcm
snd                    61592  3 snd_powermac,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore              11396  1 snd
i2c_core               28020  2 i2c_keywest,snd_powermac
sg                     38820  0
sr_mod                 20836  0
sd_mod                 21024  0
scsi_mod               94976  3 sg,sr_mod,sd_mod

Did you compile both OSS and Alsa in your kernel (either as
a module or directly) ? If this is the case, may be you should
drop OSS from the kernel and emerge alsa-oss for the
compatibility layer. I also don't see i2c core in your list did
you compile it into the kernel?

I did not compile in either oss or i2c core. I did try loading i2c_keywest, and it didn't help.

Thanks

If you have compiled i2c_keywest, you must have enabled
i2c_core either inside the kernel or as a module. The compilation
of i2c_keywest is dependent upon it. Would you happen to have
artsd running? It is often problematic. In fact I don't know if
keywest is needed on your hardware may be you need some
other module like the hydra (in i2c I mean)?
