Okay, I know Apple says that you can't connect an iBook to a DVI display, but the fact is that the new iBook G4 has the same kind of mini-DVI port as the Powerbook, and Apple sell a connector for converting mini-DVI to DVI.

Has anyone ever tried to hook an iBook up to a DVI display? Anyone got it to work with an Apple Cinerma display? If so, which size/resolution, and with which operating systems?

It might be possible with OSX - I simply have no idea - but everything I've seen says external monitors on apple laptops just don't work under linux. This may be wrong, or it may just be my (much older) fruitbook.

It occurs to me though, do apple sell a mini-DVI to VGA convertor? If they don't then either what you're wanting to do is possible, or the port on this new iBook is utterly useless.

I'm not sure if thats the same as the mini vga port on older ibooks but apple sold an adapter that output s-video instead of vga and they would not work on ibooks made before the tv adapter came out but it would fit in the plug.

It could also be a matter of Xorg version. On my Tibook I do have DVI-out signal with Xorg 6.1.904 and above (running 6.8.2 currently). I now use a Xinerama-like MergedFB configuration, with DRI enabled on both ports.

This being said, I believe that the whole thing works only with Radeon (and not Rage) chipsets, and I don't know anything about iBooks. However, there is a success story on the matter out there, which also include an URL with instructions (the patches are no longer necessary with Xorg 6.1.904 and above). Do a search in the fora (and maybe on the Web) and you will see some other pointers. It could be a matter of what iBook you have too.
