Hi,

I am to buy an iBook G4. I browsed the web and found out two things :

1) Airport is not supported
2) The iBook does not have a PCMCIA port

I guess my last resort is a USB WiFi adapter. Has anyone managed to get one working ?

Thanks,

Hi,.
few weeks ago i've bought a netgear ma111 wifi usb adpter that work well on my iBook G4 (12" 800Mhz). It's a .11b card that I use also on my x86 system (athlonxp).

AirPort Extreme is not supported yet because the apple .11g card use a broadcom chipset than is not documented, but AirPort .11b cards works well.

zmoog: same here. Works, too, but slow.

Do you use WEP? If so, could you tell me what kind of data transfer speed you can achieve using MA111 when transferring stuff to another LAN host ? I don't go far over 120kBps.

colinleroy: sorry!

I was quite busy during past weeks. I'll try to trace the tranfert rates... maybe using scp betweek two hosts.

Stay tuned or give me your email address.

I'm really sorry for the delay...

bye.

Hi,
I am transferring now a quite big file, the ubuntu gnu/linux iso image from my ibook to another host: the sustained trasfer rate falls between 430 and 450KB/s.

source host (apple ibook):

* os: gentoo gnu/linux
* wireless adapter: netgear ma111
* ethernet adapter: none

destination host (athlon xp 2500+):
* os: gentoo gnu/linux
* wireless adapter: none
* ethernet adapter: via-rhine

wireless accesso point:
* apple airport express

ibook (ma111) <---> airport express <---> netgear hub <---> athlonxp (via-rhine)

I hope this can help you.

Any question is welcome...

bye,
zmoog

Thanks for your report :-)

I guess it's my access point that is slow: I only get ~120kB/s in a similar setup as yours, but using a 802.11b Peabird accesspoint.
