If I want gentoo with all of the extras and a very stable system, should I install PPC 32bit version on my DP 1.8 g5? Will there be thermal support? Can I use bootsplash? Does anyone know when grub 2 will be released?

64-bit Gentoo is pretty solid for me. I've been running it for about three months without much of a problem. Thermal control is alright. I also have a working GNOME for a GUI, and pieces of KDE (I am not a KDE fan, but some students of mine wanted kate). What I don't have is 3D acceleration, but I am not using the GUI very often so I do not care. Mozilla won't work. Transcode and DVD::rip won't build either (but I am working on it). I have never tried bootsplash.

This being said, mine is a dual G5 2GHz (ATI Radeon 9600 Pro), one generation older than yours (PowerMac7,2).

I am not sure why you need grub, what's wrong with yaboot? It works fine for me.
