I can't get xorg working on my ibook G4. When I run "Xorg -configure" I get these errors:
Failed to load module "fbdev" (once-only module, 0)
RADEON(0): Cannot read V_BIOS (5)

If I then run "X -config /root/xorg/xorg.conf.new", then I get a black screen, then white, red, green, blue, different grey, black... until I press ctrl+alt+backspace to return to the console where there is this error:
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/CID, removing from list!

I don't know if it is my xorg.conf which is wrong or my kernel which is configured wrongly, or both.

I use kernel-2.6.7 and I have configured it using "genkernel --menuconfig --kernel-config="usr/share/genkernel/ppc/G4" all".

That does not make any difference, but thanks for the answer.

Hi,

Check to see if fb support is compiled in your kernel.

I have:
Code:

#
# Graphics support
#
CONFIG_FB=y
# CONFIG_FB_CIRRUS is not set
# CONFIG_FB_PM2 is not set
# CONFIG_FB_CYBER2000 is not set
CONFIG_FB_OF=y
# CONFIG_FB_CONTROL is not set
# CONFIG_FB_PLATINUM is not set
# CONFIG_FB_VALKYRIE is not set
# CONFIG_FB_CT65550 is not set
# CONFIG_FB_ASILIANT is not set
# CONFIG_FB_IMSTT is not set
# CONFIG_FB_VGA16 is not set
# CONFIG_FB_RIVA is not set
# CONFIG_FB_MATROX is not set
# CONFIG_FB_RADEON_OLD is not set
CONFIG_FB_RADEON=y
CONFIG_FB_RADEON_I2C=y
# CONFIG_FB_RADEON_DEBUG is not set
# CONFIG_FB_ATY128 is not set
# CONFIG_FB_ATY is not set
# CONFIG_FB_SIS is not set
# CONFIG_FB_NEOMAGIC is not set
# CONFIG_FB_KYRO is not set
# CONFIG_FB_3DFX is not set
# CONFIG_FB_VOODOO1 is not set

Mine is something like this (how do I copy information from my files into links?):

Code:

#
# Graphics support
#
CONFIG_FB=y
# CONFIG_FB_CIRRUS is not set
# CONFIG_FB_PM2 is not set
# CONFIG_FB_CYBER2000 is not set
CONFIG_FB_OF=y
CONFIG_FB_CONTROL=y
CONFIG_FB_PLATINUM=y
CONFIG_FB_VALKYRIE=y
CONFIG_FB_CT65550=y
CONFIG_FB_ASILIANT=y
# CONFIG_FB_IMSTT is not set
# CONFIG_FB_VGA16 is not set
# CONFIG_FB_RIVA is not set
CONFIG_FB_MATROX=y
# CONFIG_FB_RADEON_OLD is not set
CONFIG_FB_RADEON=y
CONFIG_FB_RADEON_I2C=y
# CONFIG_FB_RADEON_DEBUG is not set
CONFIG_FB_ATY128=y
# CONFIG_FB_ATY is not set
# CONFIG_FB_SIS is not set
# CONFIG_FB_NEOMAGIC is not set
# CONFIG_FB_KYRO is not set
# CONFIG_FB_3DFX is not set
# CONFIG_FB_VOODOO1 is not set
# CONFIG_FB_TRIDENT is not set
# CONFIG_FB_VIRTUAL is not set

I only load sungem in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

Could it be my yaboot.conf which is wrong? I have:
Code:

image=/boot/kernel-2.6.7-gentoo-r14
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.7-gentoo-r14
label=Gentoo-2.6.7
root=/dev/hda4
read-only

I just saw that when I run "Xorg -configure" it list video drivers just before it gives the error that it failed to load fbdev, and fbdev is listed twice in the list of video drivers.

I have an ibook g4 myself. If you need a stable xorg.conf file to start with, I would definitely suggest the ppc config file database ( http://ppcconfdb.sourceforge.net/ ). They have an ibook g4 entry that has an xfree86 config file (which for now I think is the same as the xorg.conf file). Its a bit weird as their tarball has all these extra dirs, but I use it (and then mutate it a bit to fit my needs--ie the one given is for a spanish keyboard). But it should boot into xorg fine.

Here's my xorg.conf if you want to copy and paste it (though I dunno how to copy and paste via the console :P)

Thanks alaterale, your config-file works for me: fluxbox started without problems and this message is sent using firefox :D
