Introduction

Well, I haven't been using Gentoo for long but I have made a HOWTO on the wiki that explains howto setup a HP PSC 2210 printer so you can print, scan and use the card reader functions. It explains how to use HPOJ and CUPS so will be suitable for nearly all HP USB printers. I was originally doing at just a HPOJ / CUPS howto (saw it on the wishlist) but I couldn't really find anything that explains how to set up scanning and using the card reader very well.

A couple of things you might want to include. There are actually 2 ways to access the card readers, either as usb mass storage devices or with ptal-photod & mtools. I'm not really sure how the photod & mtools method works as I have never used it. Anyway, if you're accessing your card readers via the usb mass storage device way you should stop the ptal-photod from being loaded as you don't need it. Edit your /etc/ptal/*printer* file and comment out the init.photod option. One less process you don't need. Also if you are using cups you most likely don't need the ptal-printd process. That can also be stopped by editing the above file. You can find additional info here.

Very good guide - thank you!

One thing you might want to change is where it says 'emerge sane'. That should either be taken out (as you have an 'emerge xsane' later on), or replaced with 'emerge sane-backends'.
