hi! when im trying to "emerge gento-dev-sources" i get this:

!!! Error: the virtual/modutils package conflicts with another package.
!!! both can't be installed on the same system together.
!!! Please use 'emerge --pretend' to determine blockers.

emerge -p gento-dev-sources

[blocks B ] sys-apps/modutils ("virtual/modutils" from pkg sys-apps/module-init-tools-3.0-r2<---
[ebuild N ] dev-libs/ucl-1.01-r1
[ebuild N ] sys-apps/module-init-tools-3.0-r2
[ebuild N ] sys-kernel/gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.8-r7

hum how do i unblock "remove" the red one ? why is it even there ?

thnx!

Hi,

sometimes, packet conflicts can`t be solved by portage.
I had this problem twice, in both cases it could be solved by unmerging the blocking package.
I`m not sure if this is the way to do it, or if your system could be crashed by doing so! But there has to be a faq or thread about blocking packages whereI got this tip from...

That's exactly right. A blocking package occurs when a package that is already installed provides the same functionality. Blocking prevents duplication of functionality. We don't want more than one mailer for instance. Basically, a blocker usually provides the same functionality, and it is safe to unmerge the blocking pacakge and continue with the merge. In this case, the functionality of modutils has been replaced by module-init-tools. modutils only works with the 2.4 kernel, but module-init-tools works with both the 2.4 kernel and the 2.6 kernel.
