I am currently in the market for a laptop and am considering the ibook but have heard some bad things regarding heat issues and fan control. So what's the story? How hot does your ibook get and is there decent fan control available under linux? What about cpu scaling?

The ibook 900 gets hot when sitting on my lap, and sometimes when just sitting on the table. The fan sounds a bit chincy, and I'm not sure how effective it is. It get's hot in the bottom left corner, right where the hard rive and cpu are located. It's a bit uncomfortable.

Also, cpu scaling on the G3's are of little help, and I suspect it's the same with the G4's, though I'd try it if I had one. The main heat issues are caused by the hard drive in these laptops. The best way to reduce this is to use metalog with buffering (to turn buffering on, edit /etc/conf.d/metalog), which will turn the hard drive off when there isn't much activity to log. Also you might try a filesystem that reduces hard drive activity, like reiserfs (over ext3). Finally, check "man hdpram" to get a handle on how to control your hard drive.
