I'm getting bad sound (lots of clicks and scratches) with certain video files in both mplayer and totem. My sound is fine in beep-media-player and with divx avi files but when I try to play an mpg or xvid avi it gets really bad.

I've tried playing them in mplayer with oss (-ao oss) like the howto powerbook thread says to but I don't get any sound then.

I've got a PowerBook Alu G4 1.33GHz 15" that I just put Gentoo on the other day. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Thanks,
gnug

Which kernel sound driver are you using, alsa or oss? I used to have some issues with the oss driver.

Also, with the alsa drive, sometime when you wake your laptop from sleep, the mixer levels are messed up, and you have to switch outputs from speakers to headphones. You can just plug in headphones and unplug then, and it will fix this. Are you playing through your built-in speakers?

If the problem's just with mplayer, you can try -ao sdl, to use sdl output. Otherwise, I'm stumped.
