I'm having a heck of a time trying to solve this problem. When launching emacs the splash screen displays empty boxes (like the kind you get when the font is missing) and the terminal shows this message:

Code:
Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-helvetica-medium-r-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1" to type FontStruct

When trying to change fonts using Shift-left mouse, it seg-faults. The only way I figured out to get it to run is by using a font option at startup:

Code:
emacs -fn "fixed"

The splash screen still comes up with empty boxes but it seems that the problem is only with the splash screen--it works fine otherwise. Note that the warning error still shows up in the terminal.

There used to be more missing fonts in the list but after emerging some new fonts and trying various things with /etc/xorg.conf and various X11 font settings it got down to just this one warning.

I tried the ebuilds for the stable ppc and the unstable ~ppc and even downloaded and built the "official" gnu source but keep getting the same results.

This problem was introduced with the xorg-6.8 ebuilds. The only way I know to fix it is to make sure that "bitmap-fonts" is in your USE flags when emerging xorg. You should probably have "xprint" in there as well.

Thanks, that saved me!!! Using emacs is the most important part of my work in linux, and it is a trifle inconvenient if you can't see what you're typing. I re-emerged xorg (later, I had to re-emerge the terminus-font as well), and now everything is back to normal. This should be somewhere in the docs; the "bitmap-fonts" flag isn't even in the normal gentoo docs.

xorg-6.8.0 is still in testing on ppc, the ebuild itself is still undergoing changes. Once things stabilize the documents should be updated. If you want things to stay more stable, please use the stable profile instead of ~ppc.

Thank you very much.

I have no idea how or why I installed xorg-6.8.0-r1. Sometimes when a package doesn't work properly I try out the testing package to see if that works any better.

Thanks again--hopefully the bitmap-fonts will be on by default when it does stabilize. So far Gentoo PPC is working great, thanks to all the developers!

I wish this had done it for me.

Take a look at the current state of my emacs.

I emerged xorg-x11 (6.8.0-r3 on x86) with bitmap-fonts set and even re-emerged emacs afterwards. Help!

I had some problems with Xemacs and fonts a while back, which got all resolved with the latest build of Xorg. I think it was released last week(ish)... Not much of a specific help, but I thought I should mention it :-D

Cheers,
Jens

Today I completely pruned my world file and rebuilt what was broken. Somehow, this fixed my problem.

Sorry I know this isn't going to be of any help either, because there were a few dozen packages involved.
