how can I watch WMV video ? I have Xine installed, but win32codecs is masked (-ppc).

Thank you.

I am afraid win32codec works on x86 only like wine itself. So
you cannot use them on ppc at least directly.

I guess it would be possible to use qemu to run a x86 version of
xine or mplayer compiled with those codecs but I am not
aware of anyone giving it a shot.

But the short of it is that you can't watch those WMV on
linuxppc at the moment, sorry.

Well you CAN watch wmv files on ppc its just certain ones you cant. Usually the ones with the header 'WMV3' you cant. If i remember correctly something being masked '-ppc' means that it is known to have problems and/or not work at all on ppc.

OK technically there are some WMV codecs that have been reverse
enginered and that can be implemented without having to load
the windows codecs and those you probably can watch with
either mplayer or xine.
But the latest version of the codec WMV9 is not, and you
would need to use some binary codec. win32codec are in -ppc
because unless there is some notable progress on darwine they
are useless on ppc. They are x86 binaries, there is not much
you can do with them. Mplayer and xine on x86 use a "wrapper"
inspired by wine and libwine to load and use them. The same trick
cannot be used on ppc. That's why I mentionned qemu.

FFmpeg supports WMV codec files recently so we can view WMV videos in PowerPC plataform, in theory. I'm emerging the latest ffmpeg and mplayer to probe it.

Any luck? Note that mplayer is using its own snapshot of ffmpeg so emerging it is probably useless.

It works! The only thing you have to do is to add these lines to /etc/portage/package.keyword

Code:

media-video/mplayer -* ~*
media-video/ffmpeg -* ~*

and to add these lines to /etc/portage/package.unmask

Code:

media-video/mplayer
media-video/ffmpeg

and then do "emerge -av ffmpeg mplayer". I try out the WMV video support with the HALO WARS trailer and it works!

Don't work on my ppc. Can you post the output of:
Code:
emerge -pv ffmpeg mplayer

Perhaps my USE flags are wrong.

TIA

Code:

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

I am a bit disappointed :( I did a lot of keywording and unmasking to get the latest ffmpeg
snapshot and be able to play shn (shorten - a lossless audio codec similar to flac) files.
After some recompiling, playback works in ffplay and xine (I just unmasked mplayer
but I expect that it will work there as well). However amarok which says it supports every
files supported by the engine selected failed miserably (I recompiled it as well for
good measure). xine plays shorten files and in theory that means amarok should as well
but that is not currently the case. I will try amarok 1.4.4 later on to see if it is the case there
as well.

Really disappointed. Both amarok (1.4.3 and 1.4.4) and vlc (0.8.5-r5) cannot play
shorten file while it is supported by ffmpeg and xine.
I have to use xine to play shn files. Which is better than nothing which was the
case after the removal of xmms.

No, it does not play sound. If you look at the person who reported it working in this thread, it was with a different wmv file.

Size of the this Halo .wmv:
VDec: vo config request - 1280 x 720 (preferred colorspace: Planar YV12)

Size of the working .wmv in this thread:
VDec: vo config request - 640 x 480 (preferred colorspace: Planar YV12)

The working .wmv has MP3 sound, while this one has wma9dmo. Not sure what that is, but it looks like we don't have support for it on PPC.
